Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has announced their decision to allow generic top level domain names (gTLDs) to end with almost any word in any language. This ruling also extends to brand names, which could be potentially great news for those brands that can afford the hefty price tags that come with them.
Applications will be accepted early in 2012, at a cost of £114,000. Whilst large brands will have the budget to invest, there will also be additional costs incurred thorough search optimisation and consumer awareness. Consumers are used to the distinction between the current gTLDs – will this be something that becomes beneficial in the world of global trading or will they simply become even more confused? Is this just another fee that spreads ever decreasing marketing budgets more thinly? I’m going to be watching with interest.
